Four Witches, Four Lives, One Hell of a Reason to Fight
Oh, I absolutely loved this book!!!
I have a particular weakness for witches, mythology and history, so when I started reading Witchy Women Hammer, I was already intrigued by the premise. What I wasn’t expecting was to fall completely in love with four women who couldn’t be more different from one another.
Jane, Gina, Arya and Maria. Gosh, how I loved these women!
What fascinated me the most was how the author created four completely different personalities, each with her own life, career, family problems, insecurities, ambitions and emotional wounds. They have their individual struggles, their own ways of dealing with the world and, naturally, their own opinions about practically everything.
Yet they all share something beautiful. A love for magick and the determination to fight for women.
I think that’s what made me love this book so much.
We often speak about strong female characters as if strength were a particular personality trait. As if a strong woman must be fearless, independent, tough and perfectly capable of handling everything life throws at her.
I loved that these women were allowed to be vulnerable. They could be extraordinarily powerful and still have complicated relationships with their families, struggle with grief, feel insecure or question their own decisions.
They could be brilliant in their professional lives and completely lost when it came to something personal.
Gosh, isn’t that just life?
I particularly enjoyed how their differences became part of what made them so interesting together. They don’t always think alike, they don’t approach problems in the same way, and they certainly have different ideas about how to solve them.
I mean, put four strong-minded women together, give them extraordinary magical abilities and a rather ambitious mission, and of course things are going to become wonderfully chaotic!
But beneath all that chaos is something I found genuinely touching.
Women they don’t know. Women who lived centuries before them. Women who suffered simply because they were different, intelligent, independent or unfortunate enough to live in a time when being a woman could already be considered a disadvantage.
I also loved that the author gave their fight a historical foundation.
The research behind this book impressed me. The historical figures, the persecution of women, the atmosphere of the period and the way the past becomes part of the adventure made the story even more fascinating.
I’ve always found the history of witch hunts particularly disturbing. Imagine how many women’s lives were destroyed because someone decided they were dangerous, inconvenient or simply too different.
Imagine having your knowledge, independence or personality turned into evidence against you.
The idea of four modern women, each with her own struggles, travelling into that world ready to challenge it is absolutely delicious.
Now, let’s talk about the magick!
Oh, how I enjoyed the magick!
I loved the mythology, the different elements, the magical creatures and the way supernatural things existed alongside the most ordinary aspects of these women’s lives.
Because yes, apparently you can have extraordinary powers and still have family drama, responsibilities and a thousand other problems waiting for you.
I found that rather amusing.
I also loved that the story wasn’t afraid to become dark. You know me, give me a little darkness, some questionable decisions, emotional consequences and characters who find themselves in situations far beyond their control, and I’m having a wonderful time.
What made the darker moments work for me was that I actually cared about these women.
By that point, they had become much more than four witches on an adventure. They felt like four women I had come to know, with all their contradictions, vulnerabilities and wonderful qualities.
I wanted them to succeed. I worried about them. I laughed at their differences. I admired their courage.
Most importantly, I loved that their friendship never required them to become alike.
I think that’s something we could all learn from.
We can be completely different, disagree about a thousand things and still stand side by side when something truly matters.
That, for me, was the heart of this book.
I finished Witchy Women Hammer with that wonderful feeling of having spent time in a world I would happily return to.
What an adventure!
For the history, the mythology, the darkness, the wonderfully chaotic magick and, above everything else, for Jane, Gina, Arya and Maria.
Four different women, four different lives, four different kinds of strength.
One hell of a reason to fight.
